Roman Bird-Form Glass Perfume Vessel

A rare and highly evocative Roman blown-glass perfume vessel in the stylised form of a bird, dating to the 1st century AD. Formed from translucent pale blue-green glass, its surface has been richly transformed by burial, with areas of mineral incrustation and particularly attractive silver, gold, blue and violet iridescence.

The vessel has a tall cylindrical neck, gently flaring towards the mouth and terminating in a neatly folded rim. The neck flows directly into the full, rounded body of the bird, which is entirely convex beneath, without a flattened or pushed-in base. The body then tapers into a long, narrow projecting tail.

The completely rounded underside is an integral part of the design. Unlike a conventional flask or unguentarium, the vessel was not intended to stand securely on a flat surface, but rests precariously on the lowest point of its convex body.

Of particular interest is the narrow tail, which formed part of the vessel’s ingenious dispensing system. These bird-shaped vessels were made with a closed tail; when the contents were required, the very tip was deliberately snapped off, creating a minute aperture through which the precious liquid could be released drop by drop. The surviving opening at the end of the tail therefore records the way in which the vessel was actually used in antiquity rather than representing accidental damage.

Such controlled dispensing was ideally suited to valuable perfumes, scented oils and cosmetic preparations, allowing only a very small quantity to be released at a time. The form thus combines a playful zoomorphic design with a highly practical function.

The modelling itself is wonderfully economical. Rather than attempting an anatomically detailed bird, the Roman glassmaker has reduced the creature to a few elegant elements: the upright neck, the swollen body and the long tapering tail. The simplicity and purity of the resulting silhouette give the vessel an unexpectedly modern sculptural quality.

Bird-shaped glass vessels belong to a distinctive group of Roman cosmetic and perfume containers. Their unusual construction transformed the storage and dispensing of precious scented liquids into something considerably more sophisticated than the use of an ordinary unguentarium.

The survival of the tall neck and folded-over rim is particularly noteworthy, while the opened tail provides direct evidence of the vessel’s original function. Extensive ancient surface weathering and iridescence lend the glass considerable visual depth while leaving its elegant original form clearly legible.
