An exceptionally fine hand-cut lead crystal acorn lantern by F. & C. Osler of Birmingham, dating to circa 1910. The substantial crystal body is finely cut with bands of diamond decoration above a sweeping star-cut design, the distinctive acorn form repeated in the pointed cut-glass finial below.
Height: 17 in (44 cm)
Width: 7¾ in (19 cm)
The lantern retains all of its silvered fittings, including its rare original ceiling rose — an important component that is so often missing from surviving antique lanterns. The completeness of the fittings, combined with the weight and clarity of the high-quality lead crystal and the precision of the hand cutting, gives the lantern a particularly impressive presence.
F. & C. Osler was one of Britain’s most celebrated manufacturers of luxury cut glass and lighting. Established in Birmingham in the early nineteenth century, the firm became internationally renowned during the Victorian period for monumental chandeliers, candelabra and architectural glass. Osler was associated with the extraordinary flowering of British glass design surrounding the Great Exhibition of 1851, and the firm’s reputation extended well beyond Britain, particularly through prestigious commissions and showrooms serving an international clientele. The V&A records that the influential designer Owen Jones even designed an Osler showroom, describing such interiors as sumptuous monuments to nineteenth-century luxury and consumption.
By the early twentieth century, when this lantern was made, Osler’s distinctive combination of brilliantly cut lead crystal and finely made metal fittings remained synonymous with high-quality decorative lighting. The acorn form is particularly effective, allowing the deep diamond and star cutting to catch and refract the light.
