Art Deco emerged in France in the early 20th century and quickly became one of the most influential design movements of the modern age. Defined by its bold geometric forms, streamlined silhouettes, and rich materials, the style embodied the optimism and glamour of the interwar years.

Originally showcased at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, Art Deco spread internationally, shaping architecture, interiors, furniture, fashion, and jewellery. It combined modernity with luxury, fusing machine-age efficiency with fine craftsmanship.

In architecture, Art Deco found expression in soaring skyscrapers and monumental public buildings, their façades decorated with angular motifs, sunbursts, zigzags, and stylised florals. In furniture and interiors, the style favoured exotic woods, lacquer, chrome, glass, and bold colours, often accented with ivory, shagreen, or gilding.

Associated with cosmopolitan sophistication and glamour, Art Deco retains an enduring appeal. Its ability to blend ornament with modern simplicity ensures its place as one of the most iconic and timeless aesthetics of the 20th century.
