The neck terminates in a \u003cstrong\u003ewidely flared, everted rim\u003c\/strong\u003e, giving the otherwise austere profile a graceful finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis elongated form belongs to the broad family of Roman \u003cstrong\u003eunguentaria\u003c\/strong\u003e, small vessels used for valuable liquids such as perfumes, scented oils, cosmetics and medicinal preparations. The extremely narrow neck restricted evaporation and allowed the contents to be poured or dispensed sparingly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vessel was \u003cstrong\u003efree-blown\u003c\/strong\u003e, and the slight irregularities of its profile retain the immediacy of ancient manufacture. Its unusually attenuated proportions are particularly striking, the long vertical neck contrasting with the compact rounded body below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCenturies of burial have produced a richly varied archaeological surface.
